1st stop...Lori's dinerA trip to San Francisco isn't complete without a visit or three to Lori's, after 3 weeks on a diet I can blow-out on their Oreos milk shake!
Lori's diner is a great diner done in the old-fashioned way of the American 50's, think of 'American Graffiti', or tv's 'Happy Days' and you'll get the idea.
Great food, and big portions, open 24 hours too. |
Road trip 2012
2nd June...
Straight to North Beach in search of the cool people, Caffe Trieste is first stop and met Larry Hankin (Seinfeld,Home alone,Pretty woman etc.). Real nice guy! Just around the corner is the Beat museum, the owner (Jerry) is a good friend of Ed Hardy - this could only mean one thing - next stop is Ed Hardy's tattoo parlour for Nick and Oliver to get special body art! More to follow about that. Caffe Trieste was the first espresso coffee house on the west coast, it's where writers, poets, and artists have hung out since the mid 50's.
The graffiti in the picture above is a Banksy in North Beach.
Coit tower was calling, we decided to walk - big mistake! I'd forgot how steep it is, great view from the top though. We returned to Vesuvio for a beer. Vesuvio is the bar where all the beat poets hung out, you can feel the vibe of past times there.
We popped out on Sunday to take a few snaps:

4th June...
Sunday was filled with proper tourist sightseeing with a movie tour, some of the photos above show a few of the sights.
Today, Tracey took Oliver for a tour around Alcatraz while Nick and I went back to North Beach, first stop was cafe Trieste which is the coolest coffee shop in town. This set us up for a visit to the Scientologist centre - there's clearly something wrong with me as they made no attempt to convert me from my Atheist bliss. After a short stop at City lights bookstore we went over the road to see Jerry at the Beat museum, this was to show him Nick's new tattoo, he was really impressed and shot off to get his camera and insisted in having a photo or two. Jerry is a really cool guy who spent time with us telling stories of the new 'On The Road' movie which will be out soon.

Oliver was impressed with Alcatraz and says that he would like to spend time in prison some day! A visit to the cable car museum was followed by an argument about who was first in line for the loo when we got back to the hotel! We are now about to plan on what to do on our last night in San Francisco. We did attempt a night at the Top of the Mark last night but the fog came and ruined the view. (Top of the Mark is a piano bar on the top floor of the Mark Hopkins hotel on Nob Hill with a 360 degree view).
Tomorrow is our first day 'on the road' with Santa Cruz being the first stop, but before that is a drive over the Golden gate bridge to Sausalito before heading down the coast.
